"Basically it has to do with glass chemistry. MnO2 was added to glass to absorb contaminants in a melt chiefly iron particles from various sources. When MnO2 is exposed to a high energy source such as Ultraviolet across the three main spectra the MnO2 slowly react with Sodium and Potassium silicates within the glass to form Sodium and Potassium permanganate. The latter we would know as Condy's Crystals, hence the purple colour. "
